True American Hero! Off-duty hero’s final act leaves a community in shock

The small Mississippi city of McComb is mourning after Sgt. Jason Blake, a respected five-year veteran of the police force, was killed in what authorities say was an apparent murder-suicide, all while off duty and rushing to help someone in need.

A call for help that turned deadly
The shooting unfolded around 3 p.m. Tuesday inside a home off Mississippi 44, near the intersection of Cole Thomas Road. McComb Police Chief Earnest Perry revealed that Sgt. Blake had been responding to an off-duty request for aid, something Perry said people often did — reaching out to Blake directly when they needed help.

According to Pike County Sheriff Wally Jones, the suspected gunman, identified as Clay Paulk, allegedly forced his way inside before shooting Blake and Nicki Wilson with a shotgun, a woman with whom Paulk had a prior relationship.

Wilson survived and was rushed to the hospital, where she is expected to make a full recovery, while Blake and Paulk were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators believe Paulk died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound with a handgun.

A wife’s emotional tribute
In a deeply moving Facebook post, Blake’s wife, Rhea, painted a picture of a man whose courage and kindness extended far beyond his badge.

“My husband was killed yesterday helping someone in a domestic violence situation,” she wrote. “He never cared what it looked like as long as he was doing the right thing. He considered it the highest of honors to lay down his life for others.”

Rhea recalled his softer side — playing basketball with neighborhood kids, rescuing animals, and fixing strangers’ cars on his days off. “He put everyone above himself. He is one of the best people I’ve ever known. I always knew if he was given the choice he would die protecting someone. I guess God gave him that choice and honored his wishes, I just wish it wasn’t so soon.”

A career of service
Before joining the McComb Police Department, Blake spent 16 years in law enforcement, including time with the Pike County Sheriff’s Office. His dedication earned him respect from colleagues, city officials, and the community he served.

Mayor Quordiniah Lockley confirmed details of the incident, stating the shooting took place around 3 p.m. Tuesday inside a residence off Mississippi 44 near Cole Thomas Road. While Sheriff Jones expressed “deepest condolences” to the Blake family, writing, “Please accept our deepest condolences for the loss of Sergeant Jason Blake. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Sergeant Blake will be dearly missed by all.”

Sgt. Jason Blake leaves behind a wife, children, and a legacy defined by selflessness, bravery, and an unwavering willingness to help, even in the most dangerous moments.
