The President\u2019s post characterized the director of A Few Good Men and When Harry Met Sally\u2026 as a \u201ctortured and struggling\u201d figure whose \u201craging obsession\u201d with the current administration had reached \u201cnew heights of paranoia.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we need at a time like this, besides common sense when it comes to guns and mental health care, is compassion and leadership,\u201d Kimmel told his audience. \u201cWe did not get that from our president, because he has none of it to give. Instead, we got a fool rambling about nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Oval Office Doubledown
\nThe friction escalated later on Monday during an Oval Office press conference. Given the opportunity to temper his remarks or offer condolences to the Reiner family, the President instead doubled down on his critique.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wasn\u2019t a fan of his at all,\u201d Trump told reporters, dismissing Reiner as a \u201cderanged person\u201d and a perpetrator of the \u201cRussia hoax.\u201d The President further suggested that Reiner\u2019s political activism had \u201churt himself career-wise\u201d and concluded that the filmmaker was \u201cvery bad for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kimmel\u2019s response was visceral. \u201cThat corroded brain is in charge of our lives,\u201d the host remarked, urging his viewers to reconsider their political allegiances in light of the President\u2019s comments. He added that, based on his personal friendship with Reiner, the director would have wanted the public to continue \u201cpointing out the loathsome atrocities\u201d emerging from the administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of the major stories are too dark for that,\u201d a visible somber Colbert said, citing the \u201cHanukkah massacre\u201d at Bondi Beach in Sydney, the shootings at Brown University, and the \u201cheartbreaking deaths\u201d of the Reiners. \u201cWe are going to do a comedy show tonight, in light of and in spite of the darkness.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Investigation into the Brentwood Homicide
\nWhile the political firestorm rages, the reality of the crime itself remains devastating. Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer, 70, were discovered stabbed to death on Sunday afternoon. Reiner\u2019s legacy as a \u201cMeathead\u201d on All in the Family and his subsequent transformation into one of Hollywood\u2019s most respected directors had made him a pillar of the creative community for over half a century.<\/p>\n
The tragedy took a further dark turn when the Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department confirmed the arrest of the couple\u2019s son, Nick Reiner, 32. He was booked Monday morning on suspicion of murder.<\/p>\n
