Huge update: Fox News’ John Roberts reveals recovery progress after malaria health scare

Fox News anchor John Roberts has revealed a new update in his recovery from a rare case of malaria, and this time, it’s exactly the news fans were hoping to hear.

After nearly a week in the hospital and days of uncertainty, Roberts confirmed over the weekend that he is now back home and continuing to recuperate.

“Out of the hospital and now recuperating at home”
The 68-year-old America Reports cohost responded directly to a concerned fan on X (formerly Twitter) who asked if he had been discharged.

“Hi Morgan – out of the hospital and now recuperating at home,” Roberts replied on September 2. “Back either later this week, or Monday, God willing.”

The update comes just days after Roberts posted from his hospital bed, revealing that he had been battling malaria, a tropical disease rarely seen in the U.S. and potentially fatal if left untreated. The longtime anchor said he had spent “five days and six nights” at Virginia’s Inova Fairfax hospital, describing malaria as “an awful disease that needs to be attacked full-force when a diagnosis is made.”

From studio lights to a sudden health crisis
Roberts initially began feeling ill days after returning from a family trip to Indonesia in July. In an interview with People, he shared that his symptoms began with full-body aches and intense chills, at one point shivering uncontrollably on live TV.

After a personal medical advisor urged him to visit the ER, doctors found dangerously low platelet and white blood cell counts. The diagnosis: malaria.

“I was a little scared,” he admitted. “I’ve never felt that sick in my life.”

Despite ongoing symptoms like temperature swings and fatigue, Roberts has credited his medical team, and his wife, ABC News correspondent Kyra Phillips, for getting him through it. In an earlier post, he thanked Phillips for finding a global malaria expert in Malawi to assist in his treatment.

Looking ahead
With Trace Gallagher temporarily co-anchoring America Reports, fans have continued to send well-wishes and prayers for Roberts’ recovery. His latest message signals a turning point and the possibility that he could be back on-air as soon as this week.

For now, the veteran journalist is focusing on rest. But after weeks of uncertainty, his message is clear: the worst is behind him.
