Country singer Toby Keith dead at 62 following cancer battle

On early Tuesday (February 6), official sources announced the passing of country music legend Toby Keith, marking the end of a remarkable career.

Keith, known for hits like ‘Should’ve Been a Cowboy‘, lost his battle with stomach cancer at the age of 62, surrounded by his loved ones on Monday night.

The news comes just 18 months after the star publicly revealed he’d been diagnosed with cancer.

A lengthy health battle
Toby Keith was perhaps one of the most well-known names in country music. The multi-platinum-selling artist enjoyed a very successful family life parallel to his professional life, but things eventually turned sad.

In mid 2022, beloved Toby Keith revealed to fans that he was not doing well. He wanted to make sure his fans knew what was going on with him and hence posted a message on his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

“Last fall I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I’ve spent the last six months receiving chemo, radiation and surgery. So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover and relax,” the singer wrote.

Even with the diagnosis, the country singer did not let his spirit come down. He ended his note with a promise of seeing his fans soon. “I am looking forward to spending this time with my family. But I will see the fans sooner than later. I can’t wait,” he wrote and signed his initials.

Even before his own diagnosis, Keith had always been a vocal advocate of cancer research. In 2006, he established the Toby Keith Foundation to help provide children with cancer with housing for free.

Toby Keith’s passing
At the People’s Choice Country Awards last September, where he received the Country Icon Award, Keith shared insights into his treatment journey, describing it as a “roller coaster” experience.

However, Keith’s journey came to a tragic end this week.

A statement was posted to the star’s official X account that read: “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

The loss of Toby Keith is undoubtedly reverberating through the music industry and among his devoted fanbase. However, his legacy as a pioneer in country music and his resilient spirit in the face of adversity will continue to inspire those who loved and cared about him.

We are sending our condolences to Toby Keith’s family, friends, and fans at this difficult time.
