Country Icon Jeannie Seely’s Cause of Death Is Far More Tragic Than Fans Expected

Jeannie Seely, Country Music Trailblazer and Opry Icon, Dies at 85 Country music has lost one of its most enduring voices. Jeannie Seely, lovingly known as “Miss Country Soul,” passed away on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the age of 85. Seely rose to prominence in the late 1960s with her Grammy-winning hit “Don’t Touch Me.”

But beyond the awards, her legacy was built on something deeper — consistency, resilience, and a profound love for the stage. She made history as the first woman to host the Grand Ole Opry, a show she would go on to grace an astonishing 5,397 times — more than any other performer in its long history.

Though she never notched a No. 1 on the charts, Seely’s impact far exceeded radio rankings. Over five decades, she served as both a torchbearer for country tradition and a welcoming figure for new generations of artists. Carly Pearce, Lorrie Morgan, and Barbara Mandrell are among the many who credit her as a guiding light.

Her publicist, Don Murray Grubbs, confirmed she died at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee, due to complications from an intestinal infection. Earlier in the year, Seely had undergone several procedures, including back surgeries and two emergency abdominal operations. She spent nearly two weeks in the ICU and battled pneumonia in her final days.

In the wake of her passing, tributes poured in from across the country music community. Alana Springsteen, TG Sheppard, Mark Wills, The Bellamy Brothers, Carly Pearce, Travis Tritt, Duane Allen of The Oak Ridge Boys, and Louise Mandrell were just a few who shared their memories and gratitude for Seely’s life and career. Jeannie Seely’s voice, spirit, and presence defined an era of country music — and helped shape its future.

Her absence will be deeply felt, but her influence will continue to echo across the Opry stage and beyond. @oakridgeboys @OpryGrandole The last date I had with my Norah Lee was with Jeannie SEELY & Gene Ward. A double date with best friends.

They are all gone but me. Jeannie hosted the segment on the OPRY when we were invited to become members. My heart is broken, tonight. I loved her
